Questions
Before you apply
Yes. An Employer Identification Number (EIN, also called FEIN) is required to affiliate, even if you have no employees. If you don’t have one yet, request it from the IRS with Form SS-4 before you apply. Use it on every return you file, in all correspondence with our office and on your organization’s bank accounts.
The online application takes about 30 minutes once your documents are at hand, and you can save and come back at any time. After you submit and pay, our review board examines your documents and may contact your references. We’ll email you if anything else is needed, and your acceptance letter appears in your account as soon as you are approved.
Your organization is in good standing when its affiliation is active, its dues are paid — through the paid-through date and the 60-day grace period after it — and its yearly financial statement was submitted by March 31. Every year Lion’s Roar reports to the IRS any subordinate that is not in good standing on March 31, so staying current protects your exemption.
It depends on your organization. Churches are generally not required to file. Other organizations may need to file Form 990-N, 990-EZ or 990 depending on their gross receipts; your acceptance letter explains the rule, and the IRS updates its thresholds from time to time, so confirm your requirement on irs.gov or with your tax professional. Your yearly financial statement to Lion’s Roar is required either way.
Let us know. Report any change to your legal name, mailing address, purpose or way of operating, and send us a copy of any amendment to your articles or bylaws. Members can report changes from their account.
